Spending rose 9% in July, almost all of it in two categories. Three changes take your emergency fund to 3.4 months.

Octant is open to a small number of people while we work with our bank-data provider on capacity. This is a real plan, generated by the product that exists today.
- Bank connections by Plaid
- AES-256 at rest
- TLS 1.3
- Read-only, always
We literally cannot move your money.
Not “we promise not to.” The connection we hold is read-only.
We never see your bank password
You sign in at your bank, through Plaid. Your credentials go to your bank and nowhere else. We never receive them and never store them.
Read-only. Always.
Octant holds a token that can read balances and transactions. There is no payment permission on it. Moving money is not a feature we have turned off — it is a permission we never held.
Encrypted end to end
AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.3 in transit. The token that reads your accounts is encrypted before it is stored, and it never leaves our servers.
Octant hides sensitive merchants from its own AI
What we don’t claim yet
Octant is not SOC 2 certified today. Our infrastructure runs on audited providers; we are not audited ourselves. Rotating the keys that encrypt your stored bank token is not in place yet either. We’ll say so here the day that changes.

Why a card?
Every bank connection costs us money for as long as it’s open — even on an unused account. A card lets us give you a real trial instead of a crippled free tier. You’re not charged until day 8, we email you on day 5, and cancelling takes one click from your account page.

Octant reads 12 months of history and writes a plan with real numbers. About 90 seconds.

One category is set aside
A recurring expense in a sensitive category is in your plan as a fixed cost. Octant uses the amount and the timing so the plan is accurate, and doesn’t look at what it’s for.
Set aside
Two incomes land nine days apart, so the account dips below $400 twice a month while the annual surplus is healthy. Moving one direct debit and one transfer ends the dip and adds $248/mo to the offset.

Your income swung between $2,100 and $9,400 a month over the last year. Paying yourself a fixed $4,600 and holding the rest in a buffer covers every month in that history, including the two worst ones.

It notices things you wouldn’t.
A recurring charge that crept up. A subscription that renewed at a new price. A category that quietly doubled. Octant compares every month against the eleven before it, so the thing you would have found in March turns up in August.

One connection needs re-authorising
Your bank asks for this every 90 days
It holds you to the plan, gently.
One weekly check-in. Progress you can see. No badges, no streak guilt, no push notification at 9pm asking why you bought coffee.
A finance app that manufactures anxiety is not engaging, it is just unpleasant — and the escape route is deleting it. The plan is the loop: one a month, checked once a week.

You’re on track on two of three things.
- Groceries under $520 $486
- Transfer to Emergency landed $300
- One subscription still active $16
Octant is new. There are no testimonials on this page because there are not yet enough users to quote honestly, and a page that invents them has told you everything you need to know about how it will treat your data.
I built it because every app I tried showed me charts of money I had already spent. I wanted the paragraph at the end — what to change, by how much, starting when. It reads twelve months of my own accounts and it does not look at what my medical payments are for, because it does not need to in order to be right.

- The connection we hold is read-only and has no payment permission on it.
- Sensitive categories are set aside server-side, before anything reaches the model.
- We do not sell data and we do not run ads. You pay us; that is the whole business model.
- Cancel and we disconnect every bank connection and delete the tokens.
Plaid is the connection layer used by thousands of financial apps. You sign in on your bank’s own page; Octant receives a token, never a password. That is a fact you can go and verify rather than a badge we drew.
We’re letting people in a few at a time.
Our bank-data provider caps how many accounts we can connect while we’re new. Rather than run a waitlist we can’t honour, we’re opening places as capacity clears.

The eight things people ask before they connect a bank.
Can Octant move my money?
No. The connection we hold is read-only and has no payment permission on it. It is not a feature we disabled; it is access we never had.
What happens to my bank password?
We never receive it. You sign in on your bank’s own page through Plaid. Plaid returns an encrypted token that reads balances and transactions. There is nothing on our side to steal, because we never hold it.
Why do you need a card for a free trial?
Every bank connection costs us money for as long as it stays open, even on an unused account. A card lets us give you a real trial instead of a crippled free tier. Nothing is charged today, we email you on day 5, and cancelling is one click.
What does the AI actually see?
Amounts, dates, categories, and merchant names for a fixed list of recognisable retail brands. Anything in a medical, legal, religious or political category is reduced to a category before analysis — the model never receives the name. This is enforced on our servers, not by asking the AI nicely.
Is Octant a financial adviser?
No, and we’re careful about this. Octant is a planning tool. It isn’t registered as an investment adviser and nothing it produces is personalised investment advice.
What if I cancel?
We disconnect every bank connection, delete the access tokens, and stop billing. Export your data first — one button, CSV and JSON.
Which banks work?
Most US institutions, through Plaid. Some connect through their own login screen (OAuth), which is more secure and looks slightly different when it appears.
Do you sell my data?
No — and we don’t run ads either, which is the only reason that promise is credible. You pay us; that’s the whole business model.
A few places at a time, and yours could be next.
No card, no bank connection, and no email from us except the one that says a place opened.
